10 Things To Buy For Your Man

Other Brands

IMAGE: BAGAHOLICBOY

What do you buy for the man who has everything? Anything, of course. Because by the time you’ve actually decided on that perfect gift, Christmas will be long over and it will be time to welcome 2016. So instead of doing all that (and wasting that perfect opportunity to score maximum brownie points with the man in your life), just pick from this 10-item gift guide I’ve assembled that’s perfect for most any man, especially me. So if anyone out there is also looking to buy me something this X’mas, just look up. Or read on.

Fine.

You want something else, more options to choose from, especially when it comes to bags.

Let’s start with backpacks, which is apparently the in-thing now. Coach (check out their Rucksack that’s priced at just SGD1190) and Saint Laurent has decent ones for men, as does Louis Vuitton, and if there’s one I have to put money on, it would be theChristopher PM in Monogram Macassar Canvas.

Another brand I’m very big on would be Loewe; check out both the Yago Backpack, which is not really a backpack but more a sling bag (or that’s how I use it anyway) and the new Puzzle Crossbody (yes, there’s a new and improved version for the boys in stores now), so go have a look.

You want something supple and roomy? Check out Celine’s Oversized Twisted Cabas. And trust me when I say this, I think the boys will definitely pull this one off much better (sorry ladies!). Anything Goyard is safe, and the Saint Louis GM might be the answer. Not as common on men here as compared to the lads I’ve seen toting it in Hong Kong or Tokyo, they also come in enough colours to please most anyone.

Ok, I’ve digressed enough, back to the post at hand. Everything shown here is either available in Singapore (see prices in SGD) or via Mr Porter online. And if anyone else has any X’mas gift related queries for men, please leave a comment and I’ll reply as best I can. #happyshopping

Tory Burch Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

Fashion

Tory Burch found inspiration in a hopeful place for the 2016 pre-fall season. She discovered poet and artist Etel Adnan, a woman who began her fame in her late ‘80s. Adnan has been an artist her whole life, and Burch tapped into her free landscapes, which are simple in nature. This inspiration shines through in the Tory Burch pre-fall 2016 collection. The loose yet deliberate silhouettes use bold colors and graphics to ramp up the excitement, so she pursued a more abstract approach to using her inspiration.

Tory Burch Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

“You have to move your customer,” said Burch, in an interview with WWD. “You can’t just do obvious things.”

And she succeeded in that idea. You wouldn’t be able to know she took inspiration from a landscape artist, but after hearing the story many of the design elements become clear. She used colors commonly found in landscapes, particularly an evening scene, and also played with lines to mimic Adnan’s own work. Burch’s sophistication was prevalent in this collection, as everything was created with finesse, even a bohemian schoolgirl-esque dress.

It consisted of a scallop-hemmed miniskirt and bishop sleeve, so it’s a more refined take on such an outfit, but it is an interesting point of reference for the designer. When put into contrast with her tea-length lace color-blocked dress, it shows Burch put a lot of thought into range for this collection. She didn’t stick with one idea or one sense of style, but flitted around to be more encompassing, and in doing so found a larger audience for the line.

Regardless of their style, the use of color-blocking is great middle ground for the designer of many talents. It begins to reach out to less adventurous fashionistas who don’t much prefer mixing colors or prints in their looks, while still being exciting enough for those who like to wear fun prints and mix color in their wardrobe. Burch is so good at different styles, so it’s nice to see her combining two in one collection. This could precedent more thought in the future, where we may see more juxtaposition between two fashion sensibilities playing out in one line.

Aside from the playing around with color, of course she utilized a print. A bold, slightly abstract floral print was featured on a floor-length dress that skirted the line between maxi and evening dress. The large, almost tribal pattern is casual to be for everyday wear, but the overall presentation suggests a more elegant purpose behind the garment. An interesting prospect on the garment, deeming in multi-modal!

Overall, she kept the Tory Burch pre-fall 2016 collection light. She used lightweight knits and cotton so as to not bog down women wearing her looks, and maintained a relaxation throughout. Oftentimes it’s the heavier knits that achieve the ultimate comfy, relaxing vibe, but she achieved it through an unmistakable casualness, while still evoking tones of elegance and sophistication. She has created a great showing for pre-fall, and stayed true to the renaissance artist she drew her inspiration from.

Rebecca Taylor Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

Fashion

New Zealand-born fashion designer Rebecca Taylor has finally unveiled her eponymous line’s recent collection, wherein a strong retro style meets some contemporary patterns and edgy cuts. As the designer declared during the preview of the Rebecca Taylor pre-fall 2016 collection, she had found inspiration in American award-winning and bestselling author Kristin Hannah’s latest book, “The Nightingale”.

Rebecca Taylor Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

“I’ve been reading The Nightingale [by Kristin Hannah], which is about the women in the French Resistance during World War II. It’s so inspiring, and there are some amazing images of them in these beautiful dresses and trenchcoats,” Taylor told Vogue regarding the novel, the story of which revolves around the life of a woman in the French village of Carriveau before and during the Nazis invasion of France. The protagonist of the novel is a determined young woman whose strength and willingness to strive for independence is vividly represented in Taylor’s line-up through the sophisticated pieces that are basically meant for the modern woman. Other similarities between Hannah’s novel and Taylor’s collection include perhaps the opening quote reading: “In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are”. As for the protagonist of the book, Rebecca Taylor is also looking for the right place where she could just be her true self, eventually finding it in the middle of two seasons.

Although featuring strong Forties influences, the Rebecca Taylor pre-fall 2016 collection is extremely versatile and eclectic, nonchalantly showing an astonishing succession of elegant and casual pieces that meet everybody’s needs and senses of style. She took old classics such as delicate peplum shirt, skirts and sweaters, as well as drop-waist dresses, and translated them into their more contemporary versions, adding contrasting bold cascades of flowers to the designs and pairing them with pointy-toe ankle boots. Those head-to-toe floral patterns also confirm one of next season’s soon-to-be most featured trends, as proven by Kate Spade’s latest pre-fall 2016 collection, too.

A burgundy cropped leather bomber jacket perfectly combines Taylor’s retro reminiscences with her more romantic side, wherein fluid balloon sleeves, pleated white skirts and ethereal white shirts create a great contrast with the line-up’s casual outfits. The collection has, in fact, it all, total-denim looks included. Wide-leg jeans, along with denim jackets and pants in pink, travel forward in time, taking the line-up to the Seventies. Instead of celebrating the hippie decade, Taylor alternates boho-chic turtlenecks and tunics with 1970s soccer hooligans-inspired details, such as the striped cuffs on a pair of silk pants.

Moreover, to better meet everyone’s needs, the talented designer also gave the collection a few quirky sophisticated evening looks that, thanks to some maxi flared skirts with sheer patterns and a lace maxi dress with geometrical motifs, perfectly manage to combine each one of Taylor’s sources of inspiration into one single piece.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Luna Studded Leather Shoulder Bag

Flower crown? Check. Fringed and embellished suede vest? Check. Something crocheted, cropped, or both? Check. So what’s missing? With Coachella in full swing and her style more spirited than ever, the festival girl needs a chic bag to polish up her faux-boho look. Enter the Marc by Marc Jacobs Luna studded shoulder bag.

With a cute and curvy crossbody-to-clutch design, a smattering of monochrome studs, and a wickedly oversized zipper-pull (on the very convenient front-flap pocket), it offers a classic shape with playful details to spare. It strikes the right balance between unfettered and refined, one that’s perfectly suited for getting wild in the grass.
