New Zealand-born fashion designer Rebecca Taylor has finally unveiled her eponymous line’s recent collection, wherein a strong retro style meets some contemporary patterns and edgy cuts. As the designer declared during the preview of the Rebecca Taylor pre-fall 2016 collection, she had found inspiration in American award-winning and bestselling author Kristin Hannah’s latest book, “The Nightingale”.

“I’ve been reading The Nightingale [by Kristin Hannah], which is about the women in the French Resistance during World War II. It’s so inspiring, and there are some amazing images of them in these beautiful dresses and trenchcoats,” Taylor told Vogue regarding the novel, the story of which revolves around the life of a woman in the French village of Carriveau before and during the Nazis invasion of France. The protagonist of the novel is a determined young woman whose strength and willingness to strive for independence is vividly represented in Taylor’s line-up through the sophisticated pieces that are basically meant for the modern woman. Other similarities between Hannah’s novel and Taylor’s collection include perhaps the opening quote reading: “In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are”. As for the protagonist of the book, Rebecca Taylor is also looking for the right place where she could just be her true self, eventually finding it in the middle of two seasons.

Although featuring strong Forties influences, the Rebecca Taylor pre-fall 2016 collection is extremely versatile and eclectic, nonchalantly showing an astonishing succession of elegant and casual pieces that meet everybody’s needs and senses of style. She took old classics such as delicate peplum shirt, skirts and sweaters, as well as drop-waist dresses, and translated them into their more contemporary versions, adding contrasting bold cascades of flowers to the designs and pairing them with pointy-toe ankle boots. A burgundy cropped leather bomber jacket perfectly combines Taylor’s retro reminiscences with her more romantic side, wherein fluid balloon sleeves, pleated white skirts and ethereal white shirts create a great contrast with the line-up’s casual outfits. The collection has, in fact, it all, total-denim looks included. Wide-leg jeans, along with denim jackets and pants in pink, travel forward in time, taking the line-up to the Seventies. Instead of celebrating the hippie decade, Taylor alternates boho-chic turtlenecks and tunics with 1970s soccer hooligans-inspired details, such as the striped cuffs on a pair of silk pants.

Since 1988, December 1 has been designated as World AIDS Day. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the pandemic that has swept the world and claimed so many lives over the past years. As one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization known as WHO, today we reflect on all the pain and suffering brought about by this disease that claims an estimated 2 million lives a year, over 270,000 of which are that of children.

For 27 years we have been talking about this issue and we will surely continue on until there is some form of cure for AIDS, a pandemic without treatment in the early 21st century.
