Victoria Beckham Designs Limited Edition Line for World AIDS Day

Fashion

Since 1988, December 1 has been designated as World AIDS Day. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the pandemic that has swept the world and claimed so many lives over the past years. As one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization known as WHO, today we reflect on all the pain and suffering brought about by this disease that claims an estimated 2 million lives a year, over 270,000 of which are that of children.

For 27 years we have been talking about this issue and we will surely continue on until there is some form of cure for AIDS, a pandemic without treatment in the early 21st century. This epidemic has also inspired many an artist, including fashion designers such as Victoria Beckham, who cannot allow the 1st of December to pass without some form of a limited edition item that spreads awareness in style.

Victoria Beckham World AIDS Day T-Shirt,

A USAIDS Global Goodwill Ambassador, Victoria Beckham has come up with an array of items that are both fashionable and high on the list of awareness-raising products, including a lovely T-shirt that has double ribbons situated on the chest as eyes inside a large heart, an exclusive World AIDS Day design. There are ribbons and keyrings, the former going for about a dollar and a half, while the latter can cost upwards of $248 USD, all available for purchase from the flagship store in London on 36 Dover Street or through the designer’s website: victoriabeckham.com for those who really want to bring fashion statements to their awareness speeches.

The day will come when this terrible disease is eradicated from the world, but until that day, we need to ensure that people stay safe, are aware of the possibilities of contracting it and keep telling their neighbours, leaving no one in the dark about the HIV/AIDS possibility.

Fashion is an interesting instrument as of itself. It has of late become a major way with which individuals can express their thoughts and beliefs, high-end designers turning to the socialization of the fashion world, as well as the political designs on them, because of the high demand for it. It can gain one popularity or turn others against it, but when it comes to awareness about something we all agree is a danger to humanity, it can only be used to score points. We give kudos to those designers like Beckham who are not afraid to speak their minds through the clothing and products they design.

“We have come such a long way in the fight against AIDS. Huge global efforts have created proven results, and more and more people are accessing treatment and prevention services. But we are not there yet. There are still people being left behind due to gender inequalities, stigma and discrimination and lack of resources. I am proud to take a stand, speaking up for change and pushing on towards our common goal of ending AIDS,” states the ambassador and we could not agree more. We are more than proud to stand with her, wearing the Victoria Beckham AIDS awareness T-shirts and the ribbon pins, the key rings in hand, knowing the money has been well spent and going to a good cause.

BURBERRY AND GOOGLE HAVE TEAMED UP TO MAKE YOU THE STAR OF YOUR OWN CAMPAIGN

Other Brands

burburry
The worlds of fashion and technology have never been as close as they are now and the latest brand to go high-tech is the Brit label Burberry. In association with Google, the heritage brand has launched a new Burberry Booth at their Regent Street Store in London where customers can create their own Burberry ad campaigns.
Recently the brand tapped a number of celebrities including Michelle Dockery, Naomi Campbell, Rosie Huntington Whitely and Romeo Beckham among others to star in video paying tribute to the famous film Billy Elliot on its 15th Anniversary. The video sees famous faces leaping up against a festive green background. At the Burberry booth you can be the star of your own 15 second clip and be a part of the celeb studded line-up thanks to real-time video-stitching technology. The clip is then shared with you and you can share it online on all your favorite social media channels.

If you’re famous and British then odds are Burberry will probably approach you for an official campaign of your own one of these days, on the other hand this might be the closest some of us might ever get to musician James Bay or Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley herself!) so if you need to find us, we’ll be queuing up outside Burberry’s flagship store on Regent Street.

A Good Time For Resale (Buying)

Other Brands

Occasionally, when I find myself with some nice chunks of free time (aka commercial breaks of Bravo shows), I like to trawl the various resale sites (Fashionphile, The Real Real and the like) as well as eBay, looking for old season items that got away. Lately, I’ve been noticing a trend – prices seem to be going down, down, down – on everything from bags, to clothes, to other accessories like scarves and jewelry.

While this is good news (unless you’re a designer bag flipper), it’s been very tempting on my wallet. There seem to be quite a few items out there going for less than they would have a year or two ago. Why this is happening, I don’t know why – maybe it’s due to the still weak international economy, currency fluctuations, or some combination of the two. Here’s an example – I remember when this Chanel black metallic flap was so in demand, and here’s one in very nice condition for almost half off.

Screen Shot 2015-05-02 at 9.13.40 PM

And another example below (of all the resale sites, I’ve been finding that Fashionphile has the best prices generally, along with regular eBay auctions).

Cabat Fashionphile

Agh! An almost new, limited edition Bottega Veneta Cabat bag for $2,700? Amazing. I watched this one for a good few weeks, but then it got sold (of course). So there’s a lesson – there are some great deals out there right now, but you still need to act fast for the steals.

As for me, I’ve largely been good and watching from the sidelines…envious of all the deals that are being had. Well okay, I did just pick up a limited/seasonal Chanel bag that I had been looking for, for probably the last five years (I’ll share when it comes). My advice for if you’re in the market for some second hand/pre loved luxury accessories right now? Try not to get sale goggles…and take advantage of some of the great prices!

Have any of you noticed a trend in prices declining lately? Where are you based? I’d love to hear more details!

Balenciaga Cabas M and Cabas S Leather-Trimmed Canvas Totes: Label Conscious

Other Brands

Balenciaga_Tote_Bag

Is Balenciaga attempting to usher in a new era of label-flashing? Looks like they’re at least giving it a go. I have mixed feeling about these new Cabas totes. On the one hand, a simplistic logo set on beige canvas and trimmed with black leather is so modest and pared-down, it’s chic. On the other hand, a simplistic logo on beige canvas reminds me of a perfume-bottle label, a freebie tote, or a shopping bag (or maybe all three).

Then again, the Cabas M, oversized and angular, and the Cabas S , smaller with bolder strips of black accents, both make for decent ways to get your designer fix without breaking the bank. That’s why I’m leaning towards yes, as long as they’re worn in the right context. Made in Italy and inspired by the sea and sailboats, either of these will make for a breezy beach bag, discreet gym tote, or easy-access carryon. Just carry it casually, and keep the rest of your labels on the hush-hush. Cabas M toteicon, $865, and Cabas S tote, $795, both available on NET-A-PORTER.

Pair with: Capture the feel of St. Tropez in the summer with Tomas Maier’s lace-up espadrilles. In all-black, you can wear these from city streets right to the sandy beach.

Inside Sofia Vergara’s Fairy-Tale Wedding in Miami

Fashion

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, 43, finally got married to actor Joe Manganiello, 38, in a fairy-tale wedding on November 22 at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Miami, Florida. The couple swapped vows in front of nearly 400 guests, among which Vergara’s co-stars and several of the couple’s celebrity friends were reunited to celebrate the magic moment.

Before the wedding actually took place, the 43-year old diva had declared she would rather look sexy than ‘like a virgin’ at her own wedding, adding: “My body looks better when I have fitted dresses with more support. I’m 43, so I can’t really be looking for something too crazy. I have to go with what looks good on me.” That’s why, since the couple announced the good news there was a mood of great anticipation not only around the wedding itself, but also around Sofia Vergara’s bridal dress.

Unsurprisingly, Vergara chose to wear a Zuhair Murad wedding dress, confirming once again the mutual esteem the Colombian-American actress and the Lebanese fashion designer have always shared (Vergara is often spotted wearing Murad’s iconic mermaid evening dresses at different red carpet events). Our curiosity about Vergara’s bridal dress increased when talking about the actress’s style choices, Zuhair Murad revealed: “She’s very much in control of her image. She knows how to dress for her figure, choosing the designs that enhance her hourglass shape and show her marvelous curves.”

Sofia walked down the aisle accompanied by her 23-year-old son, Manolo, donning a unique, sensual gown with a classic heart-shaped strapless top that made her look absolutely radiant. The intricately designed removable overskirt, which took more than 1,600 hours of work, 32 people, 350 crystals and 11 pounds of sequins in order to be completed, featured a silk tulle fabric and handmade baroque and arabesques embroideries, adorned with 3D vintage motifs. The dress’s motifs and embellishments, which weighted more than 17 lbs, were in a perfect harmony with the elaborate floral installation by florist Jeff Leatham, which stunningly decorated the aisle.

The actress ditched a veil following the wedding tradition, instead, wearing a delicate wavy hairdo and a pair of dangling diamond earrings to the tune of 55 carats, designed by Lorraine Schwartz. Even more diamonds were spotted on both her head and wrist. Why did she keep her hair down, you may ask? Here’s another Vergara’s piece of advice:

“I think women once they hit 40, they shouldn’t put their hair up again until they’re 60. I think in your twenties and thirties if you put it up you look great, once you’re 40 you age yourself putting your hair up.”

The actress’s pre-wedding cocktail party dress is also worth mentioning. Sofia Vergara wore a languid dress by Mark Zunino, a Los Angele-based fashion designer known for his custom corsets, for her pre-wedding dinner at The Breakers Resort in Miami the night before (it was a weekend-long wedding celebration and the couple had created a special hashtag #Jofía to share the details of their Big day with the fans on Instagram). Regarding this, Zunino recently told People that “she expressed she wanted a form-fitting dress that was sexy and sophisticated.” Zunino’s cocktail dress features an all-white/blush pink silk organza mini skirt (which took 3 weeks to complete) and a sweetheart-neckline top enhanced with crystal appliqués.

When it comes to weddings, style and fashion, Vergara definitely knows best! Congrats to the happy couple!
